Eat healthy food before travelingĪvoid fatty, acidic, or heavy foods before your travel, and limit your alcohol consumption. You should also avoid the stern of a smaller boat, which may be more stable than the front, but has a pungent fuel smell that may make you feel uncomfortable. We recommend avoiding sitting on the lower decks of a cruise ship. Sit in the most stable position possible in your means of transportation if you usually feel sea sick. Try to talk to someone, listen to music, enjoy the view, or meditate to distract yourself from feeling sick. You can also try moving onto the boat’s deck since fresh air helps prevent sea sickness. If you’re traveling on a cruise that offers open-air seating, try to sit there. If you’re unsure which position suits you best, you should try switching positions whenever you can to see if one feels better than another. While some people feel better standing up, others feel better lying down. Instead, you should look at the surrounding beauty or turn your eyes to the sky to avoid motion sickness. Look outside the windowįor many individuals, looking at a novel, tablet, smartphone, or other stationary objects inside a moving vessel - such as a boat or bus - makes them feel sick. Always look the same way you’re moving and avoid sitting on backward-facing seats on boats, trains, or buses. While many people benefit from sea sickness medicines, the greatest therapy is to prevent sea sickness in the first place. Tips for Using Sea Sickness Medicines Effectively Avoid looking in the opposite direction If you’re allergic to nuts, these might not be the ideal choice for you. Numerous homeopathic remedies for motion sickness often contain nux vomica, an extract from the nux vomica tree’s nuts. Although homeopathy is not well supported by science, many individuals report feeling better after using them. ![]() The idea behind homeopathic remedies is that even small doses of medicine might actually help cure the symptoms. The efficacy of the antihistamine is significantly decreased if you wait until you feel nauseous before taking it. We recommend taking an antihistamine roughly half an hour before boarding a plane or heading out on a cruise if you’re prone to seasickness. Even though these side effects are often mild, they can put your life in danger if you’re driving on your own. ![]() You shouldn’t take any strong antihistamine before driving because it may cause sleepiness, sore throat, trouble urinating, and impaired vision. Many people find that they can control or completely eliminate the unpleasantness of sea sickness by taking over-the-counter antihistamines, which you can purchase without a doctor’s consultation or prescription. While scopolamine minimizes nausea and headaches, it might not be an ideal choice for those with glaucoma, urinary tract problems, gastrointestinal system issues, or breathing problems. Here's an example of the second option: import numpy as npįrom matplotlib.offsetbox import OffsetImage, AnnotationBboxįrom matplotlib.cbook import get_sample_data Using imshow will tie the size of the image to the data coordinates of the plot. The annotation box approach will allow the image to stay at a constant size as you zoom in. Since the markersize is given in points, one would need to use the figure dpi to calculate the size of one pixel in points. The first way is the easiest to understand, but the second has a large advantage. The solution is to use a usual 'o' or 's' marker, but set the markersize to be exactly one pixel. x1, y1 randdata () for i in range (2) x2, y2. import matplotlib.pyplot as plt import numpy as np def randdata (): return np.random.uniform (low0., high1., size (100,)) Generate data. I'm making some scatter plots and I want to set the size of the points in the legend to a fixed, equal value. Use an OffsetImage inside an AnnotationBbox. Setting a fixed size for points in legend.Plot the image using imshow with the extent kwarg set based on the location you want the image at.It can be a float if all the markers have the same size or an array-like data structure if the markers have. The key is to map the scatter PathCollection to a HandlerPathCollection with an updating function being set to it. This parameter defines the size of the marker. This has the advantage that it would not use any "private" methods and works even with other objects than scatters present in the legend. Plt.legend(,, loc="lower left", markerscale=2, plt. When drawing a dot plot using matplotlib, I would like to offset overlapping datapoints to keep them all visible. points should not scale as I scale the plot and have size of 1 pixel always. H1 = Line2D(,, marker='o', markersize=np.sqrt(20), color='b', linestyle='None') Is it possible to do scatter plot in python, having points have minimal size of 1 pixel at given scale I.e. The only real downside is that you have to construct the legend explicitly from lists of objects and labels, but this is a well-documented matplotlib feature so it feels pretty safe to use. This is nice because it doesn't require placing an object in your axes (potentially triggering a resize event), and it doesn't require use of any hidden attributes. ![]() ![]() You can make a Line2D object that resembles your chosen markers, except with a different marker size of your choosing, and use that to construct the legend. But now you can use everything scatter offers. No need to touch the source, even though this is quite a hack. Now the _sizes (another underscore property) does the trick. Lgnd = plt.legend(loc="lower left", scatterpoints=1, fontsize=10) A better hack: import matplotlib.pyplot as plt Setting the transparency to be smaller than 1 could be one way to visualize this A more frequent dot will appear darker/less transparent if alpha is smaller than 1: plt.scatter(x, y, s80, alpha0. It may break down at any update in matplotlib.

Subsonic speed in mach12/10/2023 ![]() A common assumption used to circumvent this nonlinearity is that disturbances within the flow are relatively small, which allows mathematicians and engineers to linearize the compressible flow equations into a relatively easily solvable set of differential equations for either wholly subsonic or supersonic flows. Prior to the advent of powerful computers, even the simplest forms of the compressible flow equations were difficult to solve due to their nonlinearity. Mathematical analysis Streamlines for three airflow regimes (black lines) around a nondescript blunt body (blue). ![]() Later on, Richard Whitcomb designed the first supercritical airfoil using similar principles. Airfoils wing shapes were designed flatter at the top to prevent shock waves and reduce the distance of airflow over the wing. Since the airflow would hit the wings at an angle, this would decrease the wing thickness and chord ratio. The main way to stabilize an aircraft was to reduce the speed of the airflow around the wings by changing the chord of the plane wings, and one solution to prevent transonic waves was swept wings. Īfter World War II, major changes in aircraft design were seen to improve transonic flight. The slotted-wall transonic tunnel was designed by NASA and allowed researchers to test wings and different airfoils in transonic airflow to find the best wingtip shape for sonic speeds. Newer wind tunnels were designed, so researchers could test newer wing designs without risking test pilots' lives. This small flap on the underside of the plane slowed the plane to prevent shock waves, but this design only delayed finding a solution to aircraft flying at supersonic speed. Initially, NACA designed "dive flaps" to help stabilize the plane when reaching transonic flight. Not long after, the term "transonic" was defined to mean "across the speed of sound" and was invented by NACA director Hugh Dryden and Theodore von Kármán of the California Institute of Technology. However, contemporary wind tunnels did not have the capability to create wind speeds close to Mach 1 to test the effects of transonic speeds. In the 40s, Kelly Johnson became one of the first engineers to investigate the effect of compressibility on aircraft. Virden flew well below the speed of sound at Mach 0.675, which brought forth the idea of different airflows forming around the plane. He lost control of the plane when a shock wave caused by supersonic airflow developed over the wing, causing it to stall. Ralph Virden, a test pilot, crashed in a fatal plane accident. Issues with aircraft flight relating to speed first appeared during the supersonic era in 1941. It is one of the limiting factors of the size of rotors and the forward speeds of helicopters (as this speed is added to the forward-sweeping side of the rotor, possibly causing localized transonics). This puts severe, unequal stresses on the rotor blade and may lead to accidents if it occurs. Transonic speeds can also occur at the tips of rotor blades of helicopters and aircraft. Most notable is the use of swept wings, but another common form is a wasp-waist fuselage as a side effect of the Whitcomb area rule. ![]() Attempts to reduce wave drag can be seen on all high-speed aircraft. Transonic airspeeds see a rapid increase in drag from about Mach 0.8, and it is the fuel costs of the drag that typically limits the airspeed. Most modern jet powered aircraft are engineered to operate at transonic air speeds. Research has been done into weakening shock waves in transonic flight through the use of anti-shock bodies and supercritical airfoils. Experts found that shock waves can cause large-scale separation downstream, increasing drag, adding asymmetry and unsteadiness to the flow around the vehicle. Pilots found as they approached the sound barrier the airflow caused aircraft to become unsteady. The issue of transonic speed (or transonic region) first appeared during World War II. The exact range of speeds depends on the object's critical Mach number, but transonic flow is seen at flight speeds close to the speed of sound (343 m/s at sea level), typically between Mach 0.8 and 1.2. Transonic (or transsonic) flow is air flowing around an object at a speed that generates regions of both subsonic and supersonic airflow around that object. Shock waves may appear as weak optical disturbances above airliners with supercritical wings Transonic flow patterns on an airfoil showing flow patterns at and above critical Mach number Aerodynamic condensation evidences of supersonic expansion fans around a transonic F/A-18 The Sears–Haack body presents a cross-sectional area variation that minimises wave drag. Black and green jasper12/9/2023 ![]() Before you place the stone on the refractometer, you want to make sure you have a flat, somewhat polished surface to take a reading.Įach gemstone has its own RI, so discovering a sample’s RI can help you figure out what sort of stone it actually is. With that being said, Jasper has a hardness of 6.5 – 7 on the Mohs hardness scale.ĭetermining the refractive index, or RI as it’s referred to by gemologists, for Jasper is fairly straightforward, but you’ll need a specific piece of test equipment and the RI fluid to go with it. I don’t recommend actively testing the hardness of a stone because it’s destructive in nature and doesn’t really provide a definite answer to what type of stone it is. Yellows, reds, and oranges will typically show a weak to moderate magnetic attraction. That said, the magnetic attraction will vary depending on the color of the stone and how much iron is present. It just so happens the iron ore present in Jasper causes it to be magnetic. Different stones contain different minerals. The presence of iron is the main reason stones are magnetic. Tumbled specimens are tested by scraping a specimen across a piece of ungalvanized porcelain, typically known as a streak plate. Once you’ve developed robust knowledge in identifying rocks and minerals, you won’t be using destructive tests.Ī mineral streak test involves scraping the stone against a harder surface to see what color remains. This is a destructive test, so you need to ensure that you’re allowed to damage the specimen or stone if you choose to use this method. Knowing what to look for will help you more easily identify what you’re looking at.Ĭolor: Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, White, Orange, Brown, Gray, Black, Multicolored Let’s take a look at the physical properties of jasper. Colors and patterns will vary, but in many specimens, the patterns are clear. Here’s a list of characteristics Jasper displays when it’s a specimen. Is it a specimen? Jasper is found in different forms, and you’ll get better at identifying these forms by looking at and inspecting this mineral over time. It’s more likely to find beads and pendants made of jasper. Is it faceted? Very seldom is jasper faceted because it is opaque. Earth tones are more common than bright colors. The colors in the stone should be modeled or patchy in nature. Is it a cabochon? If you’re dealing with a cabochon, then it should have a medium to high polish with very little pitting on the surface. Don’t worry, you’re in luck because I have a “ how to identify agate” page that can help you. Instead, you might have a piece of agate which is commonly mistaken for jasper. As you work your way through the visual inspection you might determine early on that you don’t have a piece of jasper. The questions below are relatively easy to answer, but each type will have its own process for identifying them. The visual inspection starts with what form of jasper you have. Let’s take a deeper look into how to identify jasper like a pro. If you’ve learned a unique way to identify gems, then feel free to share it with us. There are various ways to identify rocks, minerals, crystals, and gemstones, but we will be using a method I learned while attending the Gemological Institute of America. Some of the most popular and well-known varieties are red jasper, yellow jasper, black jasper, ocean jasper, green jasper, raw jasper, picture jasper, bloodstone, brecciated jasper, bumble bee jasper, and porcelain jasper. For example, a bloodstone looks like a stone with drops of blood in it while picture jasper looks like someone painted a picture in the stone. Most varieties of jasper are named for the location they’re found or it describes exactly what type of jasper it is. One thing you will see with jasper is the naming convention. It comes in any color and takes on several appearances. Jasper’s an opaque, fine-grained Chalcedony species comprised of microscopic quartz crystals intermixed with several impurities.
